Bottrop's markets and festivals
The kick off for the carnival festivities is the "Bottrop Karnevalskirmes", (carnival fun-fair) which takes place during the days preceding Ash Wednesday. What is referred to as "The Fifth Season" throughout Germany reaches its high point on Monday before Ash Wednesday, when the dragon's procession is followed by the storming of the city centre by the town hall jesters.
Once a year, old-fashioned traditions come to life in the centre of Bottrop: The "Horse Market" takes place on the first Saturday in May. This is when horses and carriages make their way to the city centre, where blacksmiths and saddle makers demonstrate their ancient craftsmanship. All riders, traders and visitors are welcome! Another unique market for this region of Germany is the extremely popular "Asparagus Market in Kirchhellen," which attracts countless visitors every May. See and taste for yourself! Try a large variety of culinary treats, all prepared with fresh asparagus. In addition to fruits and vegetables - first and foremost asparagus of course - this product market also offers craftwork articles.
The Bottrop City Festival is another great opportunity for a visit. It takes place every year on one weekend in the summer. Music, shows, and events on several stages, a great selection of culinary delights and the famous Bottrop hospitality always make this city festival a smash hit for the locals and a large number of visitors.
On the last Sunday of every September, the "Michaelismarkt" draws visitors from near and far to the centre of Bottrop. Between 1pm and 6pm (when shops in Germany are normally closed), retail stores open their doors to shoppers, craftsmen display their work and talent, and entertainers and musicians put on a show for all visitors of this traditional autumn fair.
The Christmas market takes place for four weeks starting at the end of November and is located close to the Cyriakus Church. In addition to Christmas presents, there is also a large selection of decorations and tree ornaments. For our younger visitors, there are regular visits from Santa Clause as well as musical groups and games.
