Freefalling in the Wind Tunnel
The facility is equipped with a re-circulating wind tunnel where four big turbines generate a constant updraft which simulates the freefall speed of up to 250 kilometres per hour. The adventure of freefalling is open to all. No experience is required. Trained parachutists give detailed instruction on how to glide and land safely before the first jump. During the freefall all participants are accompanied by a trained specialist to guarantee maximum fun and safety. A technical controller ensures that the correct amount of updraft is provided for the size and weight of the skydiver.
While in flight, the glass sidewall of the wind tunnel allows an extra "kick" for the skydivers and spectators. Guests can still their thirst or appetite in the close-by snack bar. Tickets for this adventure including ground training, equipment and instructions by a trained specialist are available from 49 Euros upwards.
The special technique was developed in cooperation with the University of Berlin. In May 2008, the enterprise laid the foundation and invested altogether 4.6 million Euros. The operating company sees a big chance in strengthening its position in the event sector. For further planned facilities, the Bottrop project might serve as a reference project.
The adjacent Alpine Centre is most pleased about the new leisure offer. "The fact that such a freefalling facility has been opened on our grounds", says Managing Director Wolfgang Langmeier, "makes us proud." The lease contract has been signed for a period of 20 years by the operating company. The bar for the skydivers is run by the Alpine Centre and accentuates the close contact between the two attractions. A common merchandising is planned for the future.
